In addition to Dr. Sam Keith's name missing as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal, there are other changes on our masthead.
Dr. Paul C. Mohl, Deputy Editor under Dr. Keith, has become the new Editor-in-Chief, and Dr. Laura Roberts will continue in her role as Special Assistant to the Editor-in-Chief. However, Dr. Mohl has indicated, given that he and Dr. Keith worked so well as a team and together instituted so many shared ideas, that, like Dr. Keith, he feels that his efforts have run their course, and it is time to turn over the reins. Therefore, he has submitted his resignation, pending the two parent organizations' (AAP and AADPRT) completion of the search for an appropriate successor and a certain amount of transition time for the new person as Deputy Editor.
Dorothea Juul, Ph.D., who, as editor of the Educational Abstracts section, has been the most senior continuing member of the editorial team, has retired. Her diligent work has kept all of us aware of important developments elsewhere in the world of medical education and among all professional educators. She, too, will be sorely missed. We would like some feedback from our readers about the importance to them of our continuing this column. Dorothea's skills and knowledge are unique enough that an immediate successor is not obvious. However, if the value to our readership is substantial, we shall work diligently and persistently to continue the column and her professional tradition.
Five valued members of our Editorial Board have completed their terms: Drs. James Shore, Ellen Leibenluft, Susan Block, Tom Mackenzie, and Richard Frances. Each has made unique contributions. Dr. Shore fulfilled a very important role as a very senior leader of Academic Psychiatry. Dr. Leibenluft, a former president of AAP, brought to the board a background in research and a commitment to education in research. The special issue on that topic was originally her idea. Dr. Block has been one of the intellectual leaders of our field for some time. Her critical thinking about medical student education, problem-based learning, and how to do rigorous qualitative research has been absolutely invaluable. Dr. Mackenzie, with his warm humor and intellectual approach, has been a joy to work with. He is a former president of the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry (ADMSEP). He was our first official connection to that organization, a relationship that he has helped to strengthen. Finally, Dr. Frances brought expertise in addiction psychiatry to the Editorial Board at the time when the field became a recognized subspecialty. All of their contributions have been greatly appreciated, and we anticipate their continuing contributions as reviewers.
Their replacements are Drs. Amy Brodkey, Richard Balon, Joyce Tinsley, Carol Nadelson, and Sam Keith. Drs. Brodkey and Balon have been active contributors and reviewers for the journal for several years now. Their leadership in medical student education issues in the APA, AAP, and ADMSEP has been excellent. We look forward to their active roles in strengthening our ties with all educational organizations and their wisdom in moving the field forward methodologically, tempered by their understanding of the real world of medical student educators.
Dr. Keith is, of course, the immediate past Editor-in-Chief. We look forward to his continued counsel, advice, and wisdom. Dr. Nadelson is soon to step down as Editor-in-Chief of American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc. In that role (and before, as APA president and President of AAP), she has played a vital role in working with authors, editors, and young educators as a mentor and guide. We are absolutely delighted to have her experience available to us, especially her unique experience from inside the publishing world. And Dr. Tinsley, who is active in AADPRT, brings an outstanding background in leadership in addiction-psychiatry education to us. Her work in AADPRT has also expanded her expertise into the nuances of education in psychiatry's other subspecialty areas.
A hearty welcome to our new Editorial Board members!
