Delirium is the smoke.
Clouding the patient, the family, and the physicians who try to see through it.
All make efforts to clear the smoke, often to reveal that—
Dementia is the fire.
Glowing steadily, eroding cognition, but, somehow, previously subtle.
The psychiatrist knows—
After you clear the smoke, then look for the fire.
