The new Hertfordshire psychiatry residency program trains 20 senior residents and 23 junior residents. The junior residents rotate in the first 3 years of their training, at 6-month intervals. They also take the membership examinations for the Royal College of Psychiatrists. These examinations consist of three theory papers and a clinical assessment of skills and competency. To prepare them for these examinations, the Royal College of Psychiatrists requires residents to attend an academic course that includes topics ranging from psychology, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, psychopharmacology, and clinical subjects, such as dementia, schizophrenia, and depression. This requirement led to the need for an academic course (MRCPsych course) for junior psychiatry residents, to prepare them for the membership examinations.
