After receiving an exemption from our Institutional Review Board, we surveyed residents in our psychiatry residency program who had experienced both the old and the new on-call systems, that is, those in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th postgraduate years. The questionnaire asked their opinion regarding the new on-call policy as compared with the previous call system, on parameters such as mood, fatigue, sleep, clinical performance, health, and impact on personal relationships. Participation in the study was voluntary. The survey was distributed during a meeting for all our psychiatry residents on March 10th, 2011. The subjects were given 15 minutes to fill out the survey, during which no faculty member or study personnel were present in the room. No individual identifying data were recorded.
