I have been asked by applicants to medical school if there is anything more professionally rewarding than having a patient express gratitude for helping him or her return to health. The answer is: yes—a former student thanking you for helping him or her become a better doctor. As psychiatrists, we understand and value the critical role education plays in being a competent physician. We teach our patients, their families, the public, medical students, residents, and other health and mental health providers virtually every day of our professional lives. I cannot imagine any medical career being more rewarding than being an academic psychiatrist.
