The needs and fantasies of today's and tomorrow's psychiatrists are varied. Even though many aspects of the practice of medicine are likely to be altered, we can anticipate that psychiatrists' quests for safety and security, affiliation, esteem, and self-actualization can be fulfilled within the clinical practice and academic climates we envision. Psychiatry will remain a learned profession and become an increasingly honored one as our myths for understanding and treating psychiatric disorders become more powerful. Individual psychiatrists and the profession as a whole have the means at hand to ensure that all the quests of the past can continue to be fulfilled.
