Characteristics of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry

Richard Balon, M.D. and Michelle Riba, M.D.

Dr. Balon is Professor and Director of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, Michigan; and Dr. Riba is Clinical Associate Professor and Associate Chair for Education and Academic Affairs, Department of Psychiatry, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Address reprint requests to Dr. Balon, University Psychiatric Center, 2751 E. Jefferson, #200, Detroit, MI 48207.

A 27-item questionnaire that focused on general characteristics of directors of medical student education in psychiatry was sent to 132 U.S. medical schools (return rate: 64%, or 84 questionnaires). A tally of the responses revealed that the directors are relatively young, mostly male, with some appointed to their position relatively soon after residency. They have been in this position for a relatively short time, and their replacement rate is fairly high. They are frequently on a clinical track, generating their income from several sources. The women did not endorse research as a major activity as often as the men. The implications of these findings and some recommendations are discussed.
