Applicants to psychiatry residencies often express a preference for balance between psychotherapy/psychology and biological approaches. It is not clear, however, that parity is an achievable or even desirable goal. The degree to which balance may be achieved is influenced by the phase of training, resident preferences, scientific advances, and the healthcare system. An overemphasis on maintenance of balance may be unduly restrictive.
