Academic Psychiatry, twenty years ago. . .
With its thirteenth volume, in 1989 the Journal of Medical Education became Academic Psychiatry. The Editor-in-Chief at the time, Zebulon Taintor, stated that with its new name the journal sought to "mirror our aspiration to take in the whole field of academic psychiatry" (1). This transition coincided with the commitment of the Association for Academic Psychiatry (AAP) to step up to cosponsor the journal with the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training (AADPRT). Dr. Taintor described the journal as "the oldest medical specialty education journal—or the newest, since it is in fact the only medical specialty education journal in the world" (1).
Twenty years later, some things are the same and some things are different. We still aspire to embrace all of academic psychiatry with our mission encompassing innovation in education, mentorship and professional development, and leadership in our field. We endeavor to foster early career authors and to affirm the roles of all faculty who serve the diverse and interdependent missions that uniquely reside in academic departments of psychiatry in our society. Over 20 years, American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc., has continued to serve as our publisher. And yes, to our knowledge, we are still the oldest, newest, and only medical specialty education journal.
A few things have indeed changed for our journal over the past two decades. We are published bimonthly now, and we consistently receive nearly 200 papers for consideration each year. The journal has entered the electronic age, both in terms of its management and its publication (2, 3). The quality of papers submitted to our journal improves each year, and the development of "milestone" collections and special issues of the journal has helped give greater attention to critical issues and advance the field more rapidly than in the past. Our impact factor has been gradually increasing (4). We benefit from the extraordinary support from our expanded set of authors, readers, reviewers, advisors, and editorial board members. The journal is now jointly sponsored by every major academic society in North American psychiatry, as the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry (ADMSEP) and the American Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry (AACDP) have joined AADPRT and AAP in supporting our journal. Our reach extends beyond the United States and Canada to include manuscripts originating from dozens of countries throughout the world and the Journal is now more prominently positioned as an international journal (5, 6).
We celebrate the completion of 20 years of good work in support of the field of academic psychiatry, affirming the contributions of psychiatrists who are teachers, mentors, leaders, and researchers. As another beloved editor of our journal, Jonathan Borus, always said, "This is your journal" (2). Our journal serves you, our readers, and we express our appreciation to you for this past 20 years— and look forward to the decades ahead.
